Employee Card – Czech Republic

Overview

An Employee Card is a long-term residence permit that allows non-EU citizens to live and work in the Czech Republic for a period exceeding 3 months. It is issued for all types of employment, regardless of required education or qualification.

Who Can Apply?

  • Non-EU citizens who have secured employment in the Czech Republic.
  • The job must be registered in the Central Database of Job Vacanciesor the applicant must qualify for free access to the labour market.

Validity

  • The maximum validityof an Employee Card is 2 years.
  • The validity may be restrictedto:
    • The employment contract period.
    • The validity of a work permit.
    • The period stated in the decision issued by a recognition authorityfor a work permit or vocational training.

Processing Time

  • Standard processing time60 days.
  • Complicated cases90 days, especially if the Labour Office’s opinion is required.
  • The processing period pausesif the application is suspended or requires additional documentation.

Documents Required

Mandatory Documents

  • Completed Employee Card Application Form
  • Valid Passport
  • Proof of Accommodation (ownership certificate, lease agreement, or confirmation of accommodation)
  • Recent Passport-Sized Photograph
  • Proof of Employment Relationship, including:
    • Work contract or agreement.
    • Preliminary contract (if applicable).
  • Job Vacancy Identification Number (unless included in the application form).
  • Criminal Record Certificate from the applicant’s country of citizenship.

Formal Requirements (Third-Country Nationals)

Applications submitted outside the Czech Republic must meet the following conditions:

  • Documents must be issued within the last 180 days (except for travel documents, civil registry documents, or photographs).
  • Documents in languages other than Czech or Slovak must be provided with sworn translations into Czech.
  • Original versions of travel documents, civil registry documents, and proof of residence purpose must be submitted.
  • Documents from foreign authorities must be apostilled or legalised.

UK Residency

  • Provide a UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code.

Proof of Finance

  • Provide recent bank statements or a financial guarantee confirming sufficient funds to support your stay in the Czech Republic.

Proof of Travel

  • Round-trip flight reservation or a confirmed itinerary showing intended travel dates.
  • Valid travel health insurance covering the entire stay in the Czech Republic.

Additional Documents (Upon Request)

  • Medical Report
  • Criminal Record Certificate from any other country where the applicant has resided for six months or more in the past three years.

Additional Requirements Based on Employment Type

If the job is in the Central Database of Job Vacancies:

  • Proof of Professional Qualification (degree certificate, diploma, or professional license) – required if stated by employer, job role, or Czech law.

If the applicant has Free Access to the Labour Market:

  • Proof of Free Access (e.g., Czech university diploma).

If the job requires a Work Permit:

  • Work Permit issued by the Czech Labour Office.

If employed by an Employment Agency:

  • Additional documents as per legal requirements.

If participating in a Government-Approved Programme:

  • Some documents may be replaced with a confirmation from the employer.
  • This includes proof of accommodation, work contract, and professional qualification documents.

Photo Specifications

  • Recent, colour passport-sized photograph.
  • White or light background, no shadows.
  • Neutral expression, no smiling.
  • No sunglasses, hats, or head coverings, except for religious purposes.
  • Must be glued to the visa application form.

If the submitted photograph does not meet these requirements, the visa application will be considered incomplete, and the applicant will be required to submit a new photo.
